Restaurant Kaisaniemi

Restaurant Kaisaniemi, founded in 1827, is one of the oldest restaurants in Finland and survives to this day. It is located in the Kaisaniemi Park, just a few minutes away from the Helsinki Central Railway Station.

Cajsa Wahllund was a popular restaurant- and innkeeper in the 1810’s in Turku, and during the next decades in Helsinki. Her last guest house was in Kaisaniemi Park, which later gave its name to the entire district. Wahllund was popular especially among university students and from her time comes the Swedish-speaking students’ traditional Labor Day celebrations in Kaisaniemi.

Kaisaniemi’s customers have included such distinguished Finns as poet Eino Leino, field marshal C. G. Mannerheim, poet J. L. Runeberg, writer Z. Topelius and composer Jean Sibelius. Today, a secret passage used by Mannerheim can still be found in the Marski Room.

Mustat Silmät (Dark Eyes) is an accordeon jazz and beguine orchestra founded more than ten years ago. The band combines in a unique way old Finnish schlager, Slavic melancholy, gipsy tunes and American rhythm music. It brings a flavour from the old European metropoles, cafés and taverns – but is not forgetting the magic of the Finnish midsummer and dance halls.

Members: Jori Kalliola (vocals), Teemu Hokkanen (guitar), Olli Rautiainen (accordeon, trumpet), Matti Vallius (base), Tero Kling (drums)
